Frequently Asked Questions about Venus Termite Traps
What do the Venus Termite traps do? |
SA Pest Free Naturally traps are an early warning system to alert if termites are in striking distance of your house. The treatment packs can then be applied to eradicate the termites and the whole colony they belong to. |

Does the system work? |
SA Pest Free Naturally has been working with John French the founder of natural termite (white ant) baiting since 1996. Since that time we have destroyed hundreds of termite colonies in and around Adelaide and are refining our methods for faster results. The traps were developed to allow us to get rid of colonies outside before they get inside and are proving extremely effective. |

Is the trap treated? |
No the trap is not treated until termite activity is detected. The John French Baiting Traps are then applied. Once activity has stopped, the John French Baiting Trap can be removed, leaving the Venus Termite Trap as your alert sentinel for any new invasions in the future. |

How long will the traps last? |
The plastic component (outer casing) is guaranteed for 10 years and should last for at least 20 years. The life of the timber will vary depending on soil and moisture conditions. The wood pack will normally last a few years and can be replaced at a small cost. |

Do traps fit in pavers? |
Venus Termite Traps are the size of a small brick and will fit neatly into brick pavers. Larger pavers can be cut to size to make room for the traps. |

Will dogs or children dig them up? |
Venus traps are buried firmly in the ground and are not easy for children or dogs to dislodge. They are also not very interesting! If they are in a very vulnerable area a pot plant or brick can be placed on top. |

Are they safe for animals? |
Yes – no poison is used in the timber. Treatment packs are applied to the timber inserts in the traps only when infestation occurs. The termite growth regulator used in the treatment packs is not harmful to mammals. |

Why are traps 4 metres apart? |
Termites are blind – they find food by smell. Traps need to be close enough together so that termite soldiers looking for food sources will be attracted to the trap before they get to the house. The timber inserts in the traps are like caviar to termites. |

How do you check traps? |
Check traps by lifting the lid of each trap. Wood is not to be taken out – it will be very evident if termites have been in as there will be mud all over the top of the wood. If black ants get into the trap you need to get rid of them – because they will keep white ants out. You can get rid of black ants by pouring boiling water over them. |

Who checks the traps? |
It is important to know who is responsible for checking the traps – because if they aren’t checked then they can’t protect you. If you are in a position to check the traps yourself, that is great. If not you can get a gardener or maintenance person to check them for you 3-4 times a year - mainly during the hotter months when termites are most active. |

How often do they need to be checked? |
Traps need to be checked every 6-8 weeks between September and May as this is the time they are most active. |

I have found black ants in the traps, what do I do? |
White ants do not like black ants, so they will call at another timber restaurant. Sounds good, well it is okay if they move away from your home but they could move towards it, bypassing the traps with the black ants straight to your home. So it is important to move the black ants along either by brushing them out or more effecticely pouring boiling water on them. |

What does the trap look like when hit? |
When a trap is hit the top of the wood surface will be covered with mud or in the early stages gaps between wood will be sealed with mud. In more advanced stages you will see termites crawling around on top. Do not disturb them. |

If 2 or more traps are hit, what happens? |
Only 1 trap will need treating with the supplied treatment packs at one time as 2 traps hit will normally be from the same colony. The second hit trap will be a good indicator of the colony being destroyed when activity stops. 2 treatment packs are supplied and should be enough to wipe out most sized colonies. Sometimes a very large colony may need more. |
